A Bathroom with 'glamour'

'glamour at its best'

There is only one word that can accurately describe this room... 'glamorous' and in keeping with the rest of the house, elegance in this en-suite just had to stand out. Having previously designed and fitted another bathroom in the house our designer had a clear knowledge of what theme our client wanted to create in this room.

The 'focal' point of the room :

Your eyes are immediately drawn to the gorgeous bath which is perfectly placed next to the window so that whoever is using the bath can enjoy the view. The room was large enough to host a 'film star' bath which fits perfectly with a pretty freestanding tap. There are four small lights evenly positioned around the base of the bath highlighting the focal point of the bathing area. The lights shine upwards onto the side of the bath and if light a 'stage'

Lighting:

Lighting is elegant and subtle in each element of this room with lights shining underneath the vanity unit and around the mirror creating warmth without being too bright. Lighting in the shower is provided by a spotlight in the niche and there are lights around the ceiling for a brighter look when needed. The toilet also has a soft glow shining onto the floor. To complete how the lighting is created there are spotlights in the ceiling for a stronger glow when needed.

Storage :

Storage in any bathroom is essential and here it is in the form of a two-drawer vanity unit which was enough space for our client. The black on the unit creates the 'black and white' theme that is running through the whole room. To compliment the look, the edging around the pretty, circular shaped mirror stands out perfectly.

Tiles :

The tiles are integral to create the 'glamour' of this gorgeous room. The large 120x60cm marble effect tiles on the wall compliment the 'look and feel' of the room with black veins running through lifting the classic whiteness of the room. The crossroad white matt 80x80cm tiles work well with all the elements in the room and are perfect to create the look that our designer created.

This is simply a beautiful room to be enjoyed and to show off to friends and family. It is a grown-up space and can be used as a great way to start the day with a refreshing shower. Or, when it is time to relax using the subtle lighting and immerse into that longed for bath at the end of the day.

A part of the home that I fondly call the ‘forgotten room’ is the downstairs cloakroom, the room that is actually probably used the most; by the family of the home, by friends, and even by the Waitrose delivery driver. It is generally located towards the front of the house with the door closed, almost as if to hide the room. The question is: Why is this room hidden away and why don’t we take much notice of it? As part of updating your home, this room is a perfect start to practice in.

How to make small spaces look good

With lockdown easing, perhaps it’s time to update a room in your house. My first choice would be the downstairs cloakroom; let’s reintroduce this room and make it a real feature in the home. Inject fun by having a funky radiator, quirky tiles, and clever storage to complete the look. Use it as an opportunity to express your decorating style. Traditionally, we use this room as storage; so why not introduce clever ways of storing your essentials? Don’t choose large items of bathroom furniture; stick with furniture and items that suit the size of the room. Perhaps you could even choose some vibrant wallpaper that expresses your favourite themes and add photographs and pictures to create a family feel about the room. Focus, too, on a mirror; this is where ladies will go to check on their appearance, so consider having lighting around the edge to soften the look.

Lighting in your small space

Lighting is a key part of the room and does not just provide the functionality of having light; it adds atmosphere and mood. Having just one light in the form of a lamp ceiling light will just cast a single pool of light in the middle of the floor. By using multiple lighting sources you can achieve elements of light in all areas, making the room feel bigger and more relaxing. Even the wall-hung toilet adds to the look of the room and, coupled with lighting underneath, creates a warmth to this room. The cloakroom pictured at the beginning of this article is a beautiful cloakroom that really shows how lighting can work in a small space by using a ‘chandelier’ type light.

As the most-used room in the house, the family bathroom needs to be both functional and luxurious. We’ve handpicked our top bits of advice to help you revolutionise yours.

The family bathroom is the hub of the home. It is used to its entirety during the busy morning and at the end of the day. The room has to provide functionality and be hard-wearing to cope with the many footsteps that pound through it every day. That’s not to say that a family bathroom can’t display some design tastes, but we need to be mindful that this room is very busy!

The functional aspect

The family bathroom has two main priorities. On a practical level, it needs to be functional. If there is space in your room then two basins are a fantastic idea, to cater for the one or more children who need to get to the basin at the same time. Secondly, from an adult perspective, there needs to be some kind of luxury; a room that can transform into a haven of relaxation at the end of a long day. For this a bath is essential, with a shower attachment added into the corner of the bath for young families.

Lighting

Lighting is important in the bathroom; the darker it is the smaller it feels. A bathroom should be bright and open, but not so bright that it’s dazzling. Move away from a bright light in the middle of the ceiling and instead introduce spotlights scattered around the ceiling. These maintain brightness and can then be complemented with lighting around the basin mirror. Then add a bright blue radiator to complete the look and make a statement.

Storage

There needs to be plenty of storage in this room for all your bathroom necessities. Niches and shelving in the vanity unit underneath the basin is a great way to keep the bathroom looking uncluttered and sharp. Additionally, building a niche into the wall in the shower room is a clever use of storage for shampoo and shower gel. This way, your shower essentials are not rattling around in a shower tray.

Unlike the ensuite, the family bathroom is home to the family favourite, Calpol, and other such medicines, in addition to bath toys and family lotions. With your storage, you want to make sure that there is room for all these things as well as a hidden space for a few candles - like that lovely Jo Malone candle you use for relaxing evening baths.

If space permits, then a shower enclosure would work well for both older children and adults. This allows there to be an area designed for a quick shower in the morning or evening.

There are lots of elements to consider in the family bathroom and, if this is the only bathroom in the house, then the room has to cater for the children and adults separately. A room to be enjoyed by the whole family; the hub of the home.

The downstairs cloakroom, or the ‘forgotten room’, is a cosy small space – a room that is there for that quick toilet break and is in constant demand. It is great for decorating with a quirky style and being experimental with colours and tiles.

The ensuite is the ultimate in home luxury; simply being able to slip from your bedroom straight into your beautifully designed haven. How to pick the right components for all types of bathrooms

The components of the bathroom such as the shower, basin, toilet and radiator are all counted as furnishings for your room. The more you put into your bathroom, the more you impede on the overall space. Select carefully and think about what you actually need.

As this is a private room, there will be items that are very personal to the occupants. Therefore, storage will be key and kept to a minimum if the room is small. Clever niches in the wall can act as storage or for decoration purposes.

Depending on size, a freestanding bath can make a beautiful focal point in the room, or you can introduce a walk-in shower. Both will look equally as stunning.

For those who no longer wish to meet with designers in person or visit our showroom, we have created a new three-step design process which ensures you can achieve your dream bathroom without leaving your home. We feel it is important in bathroom projects that communication is clear and consistent, so that we can create the most gorgeous and suitable room for your needs and tastes. So that is why our new virtual design process has been cultivated to ensure that you are aware of all the options available to you and the choices we recommend at all times.

Step One

We have a new form on our website where you can send in images of your current room, including sizes and dimensions. When we receive your images, we will give you a call to discuss your requirements and what you hope to achieve from the room.

Step Two

Then, we'll get to work drawing up your new design using our CAD software.

Step Three

When your design is complete, we will give you a call to arrange a time when you can be sat in front of a suitable device; a desktop, laptop or tablet, where you can easily view the designs. During the arranged call, we will email you the images we have created, and we will discuss what we have designed, how we've designed it and how you feel about it.

Then, when you're ready, we'll switch to video and give you a tour of our showroom , explaining what we have here and discussing things in further detail. Once we've come to the necessary decisions, we'll make a plan for the next step.

In this day and age, it’s no secret that the online space is a big competitor to visiting a showroom in person but as a leading retailer, we feel there are many points of difference which can be overlooked when researching online. We thought we’d take a few minutes to write this blog and help you understand the true value of coming to a dedicated bathroom showroom (like ours for example!) and affording yourself the chance to see everything in real life, speaking to experts to help inspire you as well.

Looking Back at Retro Bathroom Design

The end of a year is the perfect time for some reflection. At Options we see the value in taking a moment to have a look at some of our past designs, particularly the completed ones throughout the last year, which you can read about in our other blog . For this blog however, we wanted to take a quick look at some retro bathroom designs and pose the question of whether or not people still enjoy a bathroom like this.

When compared to the bathroom designs of today, retro bathrooms tend to be more garish and bold. The bathroom designs you’ll find in Options today are sleek, dynamic and modern, but it’s interesting to look back at older designs and see if they can inspire us today.

It’s obvious to see how old bathroom designs tended to utilise an incredibly vivid and bold colour scheme. Many of these colours are rarely seen in bathrooms today. The same goes for the walls, which feature intricate and eye-catching designs. It’s not uncommon today to have a single feature wall in your bathroom, designed to draw the eye to a certain part of the room, but to cover your entire bathroom in a design is definitely a relic of yesteryear.

Time to Reflect - A Year in Design

We’ve had a wonderful twelve months here at Options. It’s been a year of stunning bathroom design, fabulous tiles and more and we’re always keen to showcase what we’ve been working on and what people have enjoyed from us. Now, as Christmas grows nearer, it’s time to reflect on the amazing bathrooms we’ve completed. So, rather than use too many words, let us take you on a journey throughout some of our favourite designs of 2018.

This stunning shower surrounded by beautiful wood panelling creates a natural feeling, while keeping the bathroom feeling broad and spacious.

This dynamic contrast of black and white creates a captivating bathroom. The marbling effect on the tiles helps invoke a feeling of class, while the striking juxtaposition of black and white in the bathroom really captures the eye. It’s one of our favourites.

When it comes to tiles, these are some of the most striking we’ve seen. Their geometric style and width help to make them truly stand out.

This stylish radiator helps to transform this bathroom into a stunning showcase of design.

This particular design employs space and light in a way that really blows us away. The use of a wooden texture on the floor and cabinets helps to add a natural feel to the bathroom, while creating a welcoming, sauna-like look.

Finally, this incredible bathroom sets the mood with beautiful lighting and a freestanding bath tub that helps the room look like something from a fairytale.

While bathrooms might not be the social hubs of houses that kitchens are, they’re often equally as stylish - sometimes more so! As much as you might love your partner, sharing a bathroom can be a right pain. Whether it’s clutter and make-up or shavers, stray hairs and competing for mirror room, we’ve lost count of all the problems sharing a bathroom can create.

A bathroom should be an area where you can get prepped for a busy day or relax and unwind after a long one. It shouldn’t be where you argue about leaving the seat up...

Here are a couple of ideas to make sure you feel comfortable in your bathroom and actually enjoy being there with your partner!

Discuss the Colour Scheme

Both of you should feel at home in the bathroom , so this means talking about your individual styles and coming up with a new and exciting room design that combines both your interior preferences.

Double ended baths are perfect for a couple to appreciate together. As the taps are located in the middle, both sides can have a comfortable headrest so you relax together. Another option is to integrate two shower heads into a walk-through shower, for a very contemporary feel.

Cloakroom Ideas to Make Your Smallest Room the Most Impressive

The potential of a cloakroom is much more exciting than you might think. A great room to really express yourself, this small interior is the perfect place to experiment with new and unique styles you may not be confident enough to try in a larger room. However with the limited space available you need to select carefully the layout, accessories and storage that will make the most of the space, whilst still maintaining a little wow factor. Here are a couple of ideas on making a statement in your cloakroom that won’t diminish its practicality.

1/ Contrast

Be bold with your choice of colour. Although simplicity is key within small spaces, this doesn’t mean you can’t choose intense black floor tiles with sky blue walls, gloss white accessories and a jet black radiator. 2/ Keep away from the floor

2018 is just around the corner, and for many that means it’s time for a shake-up, for a change or a redesign. Two Stunning En-Suites to Envy

Recently we have been working for a client with a rented property looking to refurb two of their en suite bathrooms. Our team are delighted with the amazing transformation of each bathroom, the before and after photos below showing just how much of an improvement was made. The designers incorporated some of our most popular brands to give each bathroom the showroom effect that our clients desired.

Bathroom No.1
This is the perfect couples bathroom with stunning twin sinks and a large spacious double ended bath. The mirror lighting on the cabinets is an exciting extra touch, ensuring there is the optimum lighting for getting ready in the morning. The dark, sleek basin with two discreet inset sinks is by Dansani, whilst the dreamy sunken bath is by Bette. The wall hung toilet is Catalano as is the sophisticated flush plate. The showerhead, taps, valves and shower handset are all from Arteform.

Bathroom No.2
The original bathroom was a traditional white design with a sunken bath, small, dark walk in shower room and a built in sink. The tiles dominating this room were white with blacks flecks throughout and a patterned border. The transformation is a beautiful tile surrounding with an elegantly placed Catalano wall hung toilet adjacent to a discreet alcove built into the wall for the toilet roll. With a stunningly simple walk in shower room with Arteform shower head and handset, the space has been cleverly designed to allow for the shower experience to be truly wonderful.

Both en suites were transformed amazingly and how perfect is it to do an eeny meeny miney mo every time you have to use the bathroom!

Clever Space in a Modern Master En Suite

‘Modernisation’ was our clients requirements for their Master En Suite in particular a double basin for both ‘his n hers’ own space.

Our designer chose an HIB ‘Vanquish’ glass cabinet with a ‘de mister’ built into the cabinet doors so that the glass did not get steamed up and our client’s hairdryer is discreetly placed on the wall next to the mirror. Storage in this basin is plentiful to keep accessories neatly away allowing more room to enjoy the clever space in this room.

The toilet is tucked neatly in between the wall length radiator and shower enclosure. Everything about this en suite is ‘just perfect’.

1/ Rimless Toilets

As beautiful as your bathroom may be, it will always need cleaning. However, there is a new style of toilet which minimises bacteria and germs, rimless toilets. Usually the rim is where the water flushes from; the underside gains residue and you are unable to see what may be underneath. Rimless toilets eliminate this inconvenience, making your toilet more hygienic and convenient, whilst having an aesthetic style unrivalled by many other toilets. 2/ Hexagonal Tiles

Our earlier blogs have stressed how alternatively shaped tiles are growing in popularity and this trend is definitely just blooming. The tile shape with the most potential for 2017 is hexagonal, having an originality and quirkiness that can give a wow factor to any interior. Hexagonal tiles perfectly replicate some of the top themes for 2017. Nature inspired bathrooms are very popular, and the honeycomb-esque feel of hexagonal tiles suits this well. They also have a futuristic look about them, another trending theme in bathroom interiors.

3/ Accent Lighting

The lighting in your bathroom can make a huge difference towards the ambience of the interior. From under cabinet lighting to create a larger appearance to the room, to feature lighting which highlights certain aspects of your interior, bespoke lighting will always be an excellent improvement to your bathroom. With so much potential for innovative and original design and integration, accent lighting is a huge trend for 2017 that you can’t miss out on. How to Choose the Perfect Flooring Tiles

There are many factors to consider when choosing the elements of a new bathroom, and flooring tiles can be one area that is difficult to decide upon. We’ve got a few tips to help you out:

1 / The colour

The amount of natural light that reaches your bathroom will indicate the best shade of floor tile for your interior. Do you need a lighter colour, to reflect the light, making the room seem bigger? Or is the room a decent size, meaning that dark tiles would bring everything together and contrast stylishly with the lighter parts of the interior. However, don’t be fooled that darker tiles will disguise the dirt; although they are a brilliant choice for a contemporary interior, they hide dirt no more that lighter coloured tiles .

2/ The Size

Are you considering wooden planks or large stone tiles? Oblong shapes such as wooden planks or long rectangular tiles can be used to trick the eye into thinking the interior is larger. If you have a smaller room, we would suggest long horizontal lines which draw the eye, making your room seem longer. However small and intricate tile combinations can give your bathroom originality and detail.

3/ Durability

For domestic use, ceramic tiles and porcelain tiles are both durable enough to ensure a long lasting interior. Porcelain is technically slightly more dense and therefore stronger, so more suited to areas with high traffic. With hundreds of porcelain and ceramic tiles available to choose from, you won’t be stuck for choice and style. Natural stone is a more classic option, durable and long-lasting with a character and timeless beauty hard to beat! 4/ The Grout

For a clean and cohesive aesthetic choose a grout that matches your tiles (and with hundreds of tile colours, this can be achieved seamlessly). Tiles can come in a huge range of materials, textures, colours and patterns. However the general shape of tiles has always been considered to be a regular square. Why not try something different? Here are a few original tile ideas to get you inspired.

If you’re going to stick with rectangular tiles, make sure you get some originality in the textures and materials. These natural wall tiles are very different from the usual regular, smooth and pure tiles you find in many contemporary bathrooms. Each tile is unique and layered in such a way that they fit together perfectly, whilst protruding in various styles. Giving a rustic look to your bathroom, these tiles will create a feature wall nobody can miss!
